How to Apply to Union County Early College

Union County Early College application process

The recruiting and application process begins in October at the middle school with a visit by our student/counselor team to speak to the 8th grade students.  Each middle school principal schedules a time for us; then, students who are interested in more information go to the 8th grade counselor and ask for the packet of information.  Night information meetings for parents are available each month on the SPCC campus beginning in December.  Applications from parents and students are then due back to the counselor at the middle school beginning in mid-January.  The counselors add information from 7th grade EOG tests, report cards, attendance, discipline, and confidential core teacher referrals and submit the complete packet beginning the end of January.  Interviews will then be scheduled by the Early College for applicants with potential for success in this school focusing on aggressive curriculum.  The final step is gathering 8th grade EOG scores, final report card, discipline and attendance reports in May.

Victoria McGovern, principal

Dear UCEC parents,

As the principal of the Union County Early College, my mission is to direct your student to become a successful high school and college student. There are several components to this success: responsibility, respect, rigor, relationships, and relevance. The faculty and staff of the Early College are focusing on all of these areas. Teachers are available from 8:30-8:55 in to help students. Peer tutors and areas for small group work are also available in the mornings before school.  Please encourage your student to use these times to resolve any questions from homework.  Students in college courses are assigned to a support classroom with a teacher on the days they do not have college classes during that period.  All students taking on line courses are assigned to a classroom with a teacher who monitors progress in the course.

Parents have asked for ways to help students at home. Here are a few.

  • Ask to see your student’s assignment sheet for each class’s assignments.
  • Ask to see your student’s notebooks. There should be dividers, and papers in each section should be in chronological order.
  • Plan a “regular” homework time so the student and the family know this is study time. Each student should have completed a “Personal Time Manager” sheet and asked you to look at it and sign off on the rough draft.
  • Periodically observe your student doing homework in the non-distracting area. You may not be able to help, but is shows you are being part of your student’s academic plan for success.
  • Help your student make long range plans for longer reading assignments or projects as they are assigned.
  • Help your student make flash cards for studying and reviewing of vocabulary words or math facts.
  • Check our website for information http://ucec.ucps.k12.nc.us
  • Praise for good work!
  • Email us or call us with questions or concerns.

Appropriate behavior in the classrooms and hallways builds maturity in the student and acceptance on the college campus.

We need volunteers. We have tried to include activities after work hours and a few on weekends so all parents can participate in their student’s educational experience.Thank you for any time you can share with us.

Victoria McGovern, Principal
